MacBook Grind
Oh no!!!! My four month old MacBook Pro has started to make an awful grinding, whirring sound as illustrated here, here and here.
Oh crap! I was very happy with it. I have never had a Windows laptop make this noise. It gets SO HOT too! I think this is why. Heat expands things dontchaknow. It sounds like the space for the fan to move has gotten smaller. Like the spindle it spins on has warped.
Now, as I bought it in the USA, does this mean I have to take it back there? Or can I take it to Apple in the UK? Y’know. Are they like – global? ;p I did buy AppleCare with it. But surely they should fix this anyway right?
The worst thing is, is that this means I will no doubt have to go without it for over a week!! I CANNOT AFFORD TO DO THAT! But I suppose now, I cannot afford not to. Hey Steve, could you please warm your hands first? They’re delicate.
So, if anyone out there has had the same problem and had to take theirs back, could you tell me – did you get a whole new one? Did you have to lock up all your files or reinstall anything at all on its return? Do they prod around your files? (Let’s not forget I’m CTO of podcast.com folks) Should I trash the Windows installation on here?

i always have in case my main pc goes tits up (even that has a drive with a clean installation on it for back up) 😉
Yes I have my main desktop PC – which really needs an overhaul (takes about 15 mins to boot up, seriously!) – but very hard to find a time window to do that while so busy.
But since this MBP is now the fastest machine I own, I have been using it alot for work, going back and forth to the usa – and SL ;P
It’s certainly the HOTTEST machine I have ever had. Unbelievable.
I also have a MacMini, but but very few apps I NEED on it. I might have to go back to my painfully slow pc laptop – with a tiny screen.
It just really sucks that Apple, the maker of oooo, such great machines should let a machine get sold that get this hot and has had so many problems, by all accounts.

I have a MacBook Pro too and have had my bare lap burned by it. Not pleasant. Since then, I’ve been using a towel.
It gets so hot, maybe if I’m to be optimistic, it’ll save me on power bills come this chilly winter.
I hope things get better!

BTW – I run WindowsXP on my MBP too. 😉
I have the Macbook Pro 17 inch. i have had it for 4 months. It worked great for about 2 week then it wouldn’t boot. I took it in to apple. They replaced the harddisk and said it didnt halp anything, so replace the logic board. I get it back with a scratch that they put on it. I show them what they did. All the manager at the Apple Store did when I showed her the scratch, was to say “sorry”.. She wasn’t about to fix it. I go home and call Apple Customer Relations. I talk to them for a few minutes and tell them what went on. THey call the manager of the Apple store on the phone and she tries to cover her behind saying “she thought it was dirt”. I take it in the next day and they shipped off to have the scracted metal case replaced. They Apple repair facility replaces the case as i saw on the web site and stated it was read y to return. 2 or 3 days later I call Apple support and Customer Relations again to find out what is taking so long. they tell me the logic board is faulty and needs to be replaced. I tell them it was just replaced. Apple says that the Apple Extreme isnt working.I ask them if they could issue a replacement. They respond with “no, its too early to issue a replacement”. So they replace the Logic Board and ship it back 7-8 days later. I get it back with case replaced and 2nd replacement Logic bord. I thought it worked great, but did notice the fan sounded louder than the previous ones. The Macbook still seemed to work great until about a week ago. Now it get very hot and when it does, the fan make a grinding sound. I took it in acouple of days ago and the Apple store wants to run a stress test on it. Since then the Macbook is now becomming very unresponsive, very terrible performance, lag in time of starting applications. I guess I have to take it in again. It will probably have it’s 4th Logic board put in. Unless they think its would be time to issue me a replacement. I will most likely call Apple Customer relations first to let them know the problem is happening before taking it in for their diagnostics.
Within the last week I’ve had the strange fan grinding as well. I’m not happy as I can’t do without my precious MBP either! At the moment, I’m praying it will fix itself!
