Cingular provides great coverage in large cities and is quite fast.  If you get a Samsung Blackjack (or other smartphone) there is an unlimited data plan that will allow you to use the blackjack as your modem and get a reasonably fast connection.  Be sure to add the "Smartphone Connect Unlimited" feature for only $20 for this connectivity.

Verizon will sell you an EVDO Card and/or capable phone.  I'm not sure the price of their plan but I'm pretty sure that it is more than cingular's $20...
